Sustainability Apps

I built an ecosystem of twelve apps for the Pacific Gas & Electric Company. These apps formed a comprehensive platform for protecting the environment. This experience was my first introduction to product development and the Salesforce platform.

It started with EarlyBird

I started building EarlyBird when I was a biologist we didn’t have common standard for collecting observations of protected species. That made it impossible for PG&E to compare results or see trends. On top of that, collecting and communicating the results of surveys was time consuming, especially for large projects.

On the wing

EarlyBird launched with a custom mobile app running on iOS and Android. It was built with Xamarin and the Salesforce Mobile SDK. We also created a robust mapping experience that let biologists describe where they looked for birds and where they actually saw them.

In the nest

On top of recording data in the filed, we also used Salesforce to offer a desktop experience that helps PG&E biologists review results, analyze data, and review upcoming projects.

The rest of the flock

Since its launch, EarlyBird has collected thousands of nest observations and served as the foundation for eleven more apps.

The other apps we built included ones that protect archeological sites, manage hazardous waste, advocate for environmental policies, track land rights, and handle complex accounting for compensatory mitigation credits.
